Shhhh… Tiptoe through the valley of the butterflies (petaloudes, in Greek) for ensuring you don’t wake them up. If you visit Rhodes in late May and September especially, you will be able to witness thousands of the butterfly-moth species known as the Jersey tiger (Panaxia Quadripunctaria), that flock to this area lured by the scent of the island’s rare Liquidambar orientalis (Oriental Sweetgum trees). The surrounding area is a splendid oasis of green and waterfalls. Don’t miss the onsite museum, local area restaurants and beaches within close proximity.
